Dear Minister Mackay:

I wish to register my wholehearted support for the Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation's Garrick Theatre redevelopment project.

Your Department's website states that one of the challenges facing regional development in Atlantic Canada is the continuing difficulties that rural communities are having in adjusting to employment losses in the resource sector. Here is a local organization attempting to play a role in dealing with this problem by drawing upon the 'cultural' and 'built' heritage of the region to redevelop an important theatre in the Downtown district of Bonavista. This project will not be a panacea for job losses in the fishing industry, but it certainly will help support economic growth as well as enhance the quality of life in the region. Investing in cultural venues like the Garrick Theatre helps to develop dynamic communities which in turn contribute to the improvement of the business climate generally---one of ACOA's stated goals.

I urge you to make sure that the necessary funding required to restore the interior of this fine old theatre be provided, so it can once again serve the people of Bonavista, as well as those on the rest of the Bonavista Peninsula.
