Dear Minister MacKay,

Good day.
So, of course I support the theatre being reopened. Everyone in the town and the surrounding areas does, which is why I am writing this letter. I want to give you some things to think about.

I'm twelve, so I know the reality about what goes on in our town on weekends, and I know that theatre being reopened would be a great thing for my generation (who just to remind you are the future). You see, in our not-so-big/not-so-small town, there isn't a lot of stuff to be at on weekends. The only real source of positive recreation is the stadium, which is only open to the general public for one hour on Saturday and Sunday, during the winter, to those lucky enough to have skates. What do teens do on a Friday or Saturday night. Well, they wander the streets, most nights in the kind of cold that gnaws at your skin, feeling completely bored. Boredom is not a fun thing. We've all experienced times where you sit forever, wracking your brains for something amusing to do. Not every kid has a sensible head on their shoulder, and the ones who don't, get into trouble. We got people who aint even teenagers, yet out doin drugs, drinkin, beatin each other up just to pass the night away, vandalising - whatever is easiest to ruin, and so on and so forth. I'm positive you get my drift.

And now I admit that you can't change the world by opening a theatre, but you can't disagree that if Bonavista had one, somewhere to go on weeknights when you're bored, something to spend your money on instead of weed or other drugs, something to look forward to on the weekend instead of spending your nights on the lonely, quite unexciting streets, then maybe our generation (I will remind once again that we are the future) will be a little better off. Onward, to my next point. How great would it be to have an indoor stage where people could perform! Somewhere to host concerts, and to put off plays. A spot for tourists to stop by, watch a show, and experience a part of our rich Newfoundland heritage. I think it would be great. I mean, everyone could benefit from it. The schools even. It's definitely something we're missing.

Well, you've heard what I've had to say. You know what could be. Now its up to you to make the right decision. I won't beg, or plead. I'll just be wishing inside, with all my heart. I guess everyone in Bonavista just has to hold their breath, and wait for the best. Peace.

Your Hopeful Pre-teen,
